UN approved Out the Blue Programs - Lusikisiki has officially eradicated dangerous, illegal pit toilets at Babheke Senior Primary School, restoring safety and dignity. The installation of eight new non-sewered sanitation (NSS) cubicles—featuring innovative, low-flush, and water-conscious toilet and handwashing systems—finally provides the 256 learners and 9 teachers with safe, dignified, and hygienic sanitation and private spaces—restoring the basic human rights which every person, every child, deeply needs and deserves.
From Pit Toilets to Dignity.
In many rural, forgotten communities, innocent children and schools continue to operate under dangerous, deeply traumatic, and unacceptable conditions. Illegal pit toilets, broken infrastructure, unsafe water access, and poor sanitation remain a frightening part of daily life, placing children, especially young girls, at constant risk.
Babheke Senior Primary School was one of those forgotten schools, operating under unsafe, fearsome, and undignified sanitation conditions. With only five dilapidated pit toilet structures—most without roofs and all without doors—the school’s 256 vulnerable learners, aged 6 to 14 years, and its staff, were forced to share inadequate facilities that compromised their safety, health, and human dignity.
As a result, some terrified learners resorted to open defecation in nearby fields, exposing themselves to additional, unimaginable risks. The horrific dangers of pit toilets became tragically clear when a young learner fell through a broken pit toilet into the sewage pit below. Although he was fortunately rescued, the traumatic incident highlights the ongoing, lethal threat faced by thousands of children across South Africa, where unsafe pit toilets continue to place young, precious lives at risk every single day.
The reality is simple and devastating: without safe water and dignified sanitation, well-being and education utterly suffers. By combining safe sanitation and community ownership, is helping to protect these precious children, strengthen our schools, and build a foundation for healthier, more resilient communities for generations to come.
