Lives Saved at Mampondo Primary School
Updated: 9 hours ago

High atop a rural hill in Flagstaff, the school was trapped with 6 decaying pit toilets. This was the living nightmare facing Mampondo Primary School, where for years, children and teachers were forced to endure conditions that stripped away their health and dignity. These old school structures had crumbled into horrific death traps—marred by gaping holes, cracked walls, missing doors, and loose, broken seats.
It got so bad that out of 6 old dilapidated pits, only 2 broken, doorless cubicles remained open for more than 165 children and 8 staff members to share. The breaking point arrived in a flash of terror when 2 children fell directly into the deep, suffocating sewage pits. They were miraculously pulled out and saved, but the horrific memory left the entire community paralyzed with fear. Teachers had to constantly abandon their classrooms just to guard the bathrooms, and it resulted in community members being reluctant to send their children to the school.
Transforming a Crumbling Crisis into a Clean Haven
By bridging the gap between innovative infrastructure and deep human empathy, the PitStop! EradicaTour operates under our UN-aligned Out Of The Blue Programs to completely eradicate dangerous pit latrines and replace them with hygienic, safe, and clean toilets. Through this framework, an industry-expert collaboration between Concor Construction, Amalooloo, and SOSNPO united with an unwavering commitment to protect our future generations.
In an astonishing, swift timeline of just 11 days, we completely transformed the school through a miraculous installation of safe, dignified sanitation solutions. The new infrastructure consists of 12 brand-new flush toilets functioning as advanced aerobic, natural composting structures built to protect both the children and the environment. 5 cubicles welcome the girls, 5 welcome the boys, and 2 give honor and convenience back to the dedicated teachers. These user-friendly toilets are built with mini tanks for flushing and feature a revolutionary, patented model that separates solid and liquid waste directly at the source. This brilliant engineering provides total liberation from dangerous septic tanks and centralized sewer systems, completely expecting the creation of toxic fecal sludge, which is incredibly difficult to dispose of in rural spaces where a consistent water supply remains a luxury.
A Sanctuary of Safety Stands Strong
This intervention effectively breaks the generational cycle of fear on the hill, turning a notorious hazard into a symbol of collective pride. While the school carefully manages access to protect these facilities, this infrastructure directly shields the surrounding community from environmental contamination. The school has been fully reclaimed as a place of sanctuary where teachers can finally focus entirely on lessons, local parents can let go of their daily anxiety, and children can finally step onto school grounds to learn, not to fear for their lives.

Impacts
Dignified WASH Access
Learners and teachers of Mampondo Primary School will no longer risk their lives while using the school toilets.
Disease Reduction
A collaborated effort can prevent any more dangerous toilet incidents, transmission of diseases and bring safety, hygiene and dignity to those who currently lack it.
Improved Water & Soil
The model separates solid and liquid waste at source, preventing faecal sludge from being created, which is incredibly difficult to dispose of.
Circular Economy
Toilets specifically developed for rural areas or where there is no consistent water supply.
Governance
Bringing together corporate funders, specialized engineers, and community non-profits allowed us to bypass traditional systemic gridlocks and deliver immediate relief directly to the school.
Economic Opportunity
The school's closeness to the major bridge build won them corporate funding to completely replace their broken facilities.
